All of the plants listed on this website may be available at the following nurseries and home improvement stores:
- Green Landscape Nursery
- Green Thumb International
- Home Depot
- Retail Nursery at Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers and Native Plants
Please contact your local nursery or home improvement store for specific plant availability. If your local nursery does not currently have the plant(s) you seek, ask if they can special order it for you.
Due to the seasonal nature of the plant material, each nursery may offer different plants. And not all plants are available in all regions at all times.
Soil Conditions in the SCV
Clay is the predominant soil type in the SCV. It is characterized by being compact, tends to stay wet (the surface cracks as it dries, but the soil is still very wet 4” to 6” deep), water pools on the surface quickly and runs off very easily when the sprinklers run or it rains. Because of the clay soil, plants often have a shortened a plant life – they don’t live as long as stated in a lot of plant books. Additionally, they can suffer from root problems if over-watered.
Thrifty 30: Plants for the Santa Clarita Valley
Many people find gardening and landscaping in the Santa Clarita Valley to be challenging. Our summers are hot and dry with little precipitation. Our winters can dip below 32 degrees, which can make many plants freeze and die. And then there are the winds! Our newest publication, the Thrifty Thirty, contains the best water-efficient plants that survive and thrive in the Santa Clarita Valley. We chose them for their attractiveness and availability as well as their water efficiency.
You can open and view the Thrifty Thirty by clicking here or pick one up our administration building located at: 27234 Bouquet Canyon Road, Santa Clarita, CA 91350
